History

Sanctuary Project is service added to our Parent Support Program in January 1,2002. The program provides a home-like setting for non-custodial parents seeking to improve and develop the relationship with their child(ren). Sanctuary Project is the only program in the city that offers Spanish speaking bilingual and bicultural staff/volunteers who supervise visits.

Target population

Non-custodial parents and their children who are court ordered for supervised visits, especially Spanish speaking families.

Services

Assessment, supervised visitation between non-custodial parents and their children and referrals for additional services.

Staff composition

One full time staff, one coordinator and program volunteers.

Advocacy efforts

Individual advocacy on behalf of children’s saftey and parent’s rights involved in the
court system.

Trends

Usually non-custodial parents cancel more scheduled visits than custodial parents and the reverse is now true. A higher percentage of non-custodial parents are asking to include another relative during the visit. In the past very few records were subpoenaed by the court. This year 40% of the records were subpoenaed. Due to the bilingual Spanish speaking staffing, families from all over the metropolitan Chicago area are requesting this service.
