History Mujeres had a history of children from the neighborhood requesting assistance with homework due to their parents' lack of English dominance and formal education. Any staff available would fulfill this task. However, it wasn't until 1988 that Mujeres established a formal after school program called Peace. Over the years, the Peace Program has expanded its staff composition and its ability to serve a larger population. The program supports school success and peaceful relationships among peers and family. Target population The program targets high-risk low income neighborhood children ages 6 to 12 in need of tutoring and structured activities. Services Assessment and referrals, case management, advocacy especially with the school system, tutoring, life building skills and recreational activities.

Staff composition Three staff: One full-time Youth Worker and part-time Assistant and the Program Coordinator shares time between all youth services. Advocacy efforts Youth Net, Illinois Coalition Against Tobacco, and Harrison Park Advisory Council. Trends There are greater demands for enrollment of children ages 6-8, which are predominately Spanish speaking with pressure to acquire English language skills in a shorter period of time. A 100% of the parents are monolingual Spanish speaking and their children are struggling to complete homework in English. Referrals for the program are coming from nearby elementary schools. We also find more children needing to address mental health issues.
